Independent Study Course


Independent Study Course

Independent study courses are designed to provide flexibility within academic programming and to allow students to complete academic requirements under special circumstances or through alternative course offerings.

Special Circumstances

Independent study may be approved under the following conditions, including but not limited to:

  1. Availability of the professor.\
  2. The student requires the course to meet program sequencing or graduation requirements, and the course is not being offered, or the session is closed.
  3. The student is unable to attend regular classes due to health reasons or other mitigating circumstances, as approved by the Program Director.

Restrictions

The following restrictions apply:

  1. Students may enroll in up to nine (9) credit hours of independent study, with the recommendation of their academic advisor and the approval of the professor and Program Director.
  2. Students must have completed a minimum of 18 credit hours before requesting an independent study.

The following guidelines govern all independent studies courses:

  1. Only theoretical courses are eligible for independent study.
  2. Clinical, laboratory, or research-based courses are not eligible for independent study.
  3. An independent study course will not exceed one academic semester/trimester. The student will not, in a given semester/trimester, take more than two independent study courses.
  4. Courses offered during the same session shall not be taken as independent studies unless authorized by the Program Director.
  5. During the session in which the student is enrolled in an independent studies course, the student must be registered in the institution as a regular student.
  6. Under no circumstances will independent study be authorized for students who have previously earned a grade of “C” or lower in the same course.
  7. Registration fees for independent study are the same as for regular courses.
  8. An independent study course must comply with the following course requirements:
  • The grade for the course is due at the end of the regular academic session.
  • Registration for the course is during the regular registration period.
  1. The student is required to take a written examination and/or additional requirements as approved by the professor.
  2. The independent study course is based on the official course syllabus.
  • Procedure for Registering for an Independent Study Course:The student must obtain clearance from the Registrar and the Program Director.
  • The student must secure signed permission from the professor who will teach the course.
  • The permission form is then forwarded administratively to the Program Director, who grants final approval for all independent studies.
  • A Student/Professor Agreement Form must be completed and signed at the Registrar’s Office.
  • The student must complete the session registration form with the Registrar.
