Message from the Dean
For purposes of contextualizing the origin of the Psy.D. Clinical Psychology Program, we share some important data here. The Psy.D. was implemented for the first time in the former Ponce School of Medicine in 1999. Since the beginning of the program, the focus has been oriented toward comprehensive health, incorporating a holistic vision of human beings and including science as a guideline for interventions in which students are trained. Having all the requirements to apply for the American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation, the first accreditation was obtained by completing the first 5 years of the Program. Since that moment, with every additional visit for re-accreditation, the Psy.D. program has been granted it, recognizing the program’s success in implementing its Practitioner/Scholar model based on the Biopsychosocial/Systemic approach.
Now, we are called the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (SBBS), at Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU). In 2022 we received the most recent visit, which included our campus in Ponce, as well as our San Juan campus program that started in 2018. The APA Commission on Accreditation granted again the re-accreditation both for Ponce and San Juan Centers.
We are very excited to welcome you all to this new academic year full of challenges and opportunities. Please feel free to review each section of this Handbook to learn about the curriculum, our faculty, institutional and program policies, and other valuable information that would guide you through this process. If you have any questions, please get in touch with us and clarify any doubts. Enjoy this academic career and get the most out of the experience.
Welcome!
Yaritza M. López Robledo, Ph.D.
