MPH 6030 - Qualitative Methods Qualitative research is a multi-method approach to the study of social interactions in natural settings. It involves the collection and analysis of empirical information from multiple sources such as first-person accounts, life histories, image analysis, semi structured and open-ended interviews, informal and formal observations, documents analysis, focus groups, among others. The researcher attempts to make sense of, or interpret, phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them. This course is intended to provide basic knowledge on qualitative research. It will help students develop an understanding, the knowledge and the skills needed to utilize qualitative research methods, as an additional alternative in public health research.
This course addresses four major topics:
- Concepts and strategies for designing, developing, and accessing public health and epidemiological survey questionnaires.
- Formatting, wording, coding, and ordering questions and evaluation of the items and instrument.
- Design issues for diverse modes of survey data collection.
- Designing items and questions to measure and evaluate various key groups of variables.
