Purpose:
This policy outlines the procedures and commitments that guide the enrollment of transfer students in courses, including those with prerequisites and corequisites, to ensure academic success, program integrity, and compliance with programmatic accreditation standards. It promotes the timely progression of students’ alignment with PHSU’s mission, vision, and values.
Policy Overview:
PHSU School of Nursing (SON) welcomes transfer students who meet the established academic and professional standards. Transfer students are those who have completed college-level coursework at an accredited higher education institution and wish to continue their studies in nursing at PHSU. PHSU SON is committed to providing transfer students with a supportive and equitable pathway to academic success. The goal is to assign a minimum of 12 credits per academic quarter to facilitate progress; however, this may not always be feasible due to course prerequisites, corequisites, curricular sequencing, and limitations on transfer credit. Specific eligibility criteria and commitments are required for enrolling in courses with prerequisites or corequisites.
Eligibility Criteria for Transfer Students
- A minimum GPA of 2.5 in verified college-level coursework is required to consider transfer credits.
- Only courses with a final grade of “B” (3.0) or higher will be eligible for credit transfer.
- Applicants with a college GPA below 2.5 may be considered for conditional admission pending review and approval by the Admissions Committee.
- Applicants may also apply for admission based on a 2.5 high school GPA, as long as they sign a waiver declining the use of previous college coursework. In these instances, the applicant will start the program as a first-time student.
- A maximum of 25 transfer credits (20% percent of the total nursing curriculum) may be accepted, and only for non-nursing courses. Nursing courses, including clinical and practice, are not eligible for transfer credits.
- All transfer students must fulfill general admission requirements, which include the submission of:
- A complete application form
- Proof of good academic standing at the institution of origin.
- Any additional documents requested by the Admissions Office
Transfer Credit Evaluation
- The Registrar will evaluate submitted transcripts in coordination with the Nursing Program Dean, the Associate Dean, and the relevant course faculty to determine eligibility and course equivalency.
- Only non-nursing courses that align with the nursing curriculum in content, depth, and learning outcomes will be considered for transfer.
- All core nursing courses, including theory, laboratory, and clinical components, must be completed at PHSU. No nursing course substitutions will be accepted.
- No transfer credit will be granted for clinical experiences or nursing practicum courses completed outside of PHSU.
- Transfer students will be assigned courses based on the approved credit validation and curriculum structure.
Enrollment and Course Assignment Guidelines
- Minimum Credit Load:
- Standard Goal: Assign at least 12 credits per academic quarter to transfer students to promote engagement and progression.
- Flexibility Due to Sequence: The course programming follows the approved curricular sequence, which may limit the number of credits a student can take per quarter. As a result, some students may enroll in fewer than 12 credits in certain quarters, especially when prerequisite, corequisite, or sequencing requirements are involved.
- Authorization for Courses with Prerequisites/Corequisites:
- Transfer students seeking enrollment in courses with pre- or corequisites must meet the following criteria:
- All transfer students must provide Official academic transcripts. o Only courses from accredited institutions with a grade of B or higher will be considered for credit.
- Applicants must be in good academic standing at their current or previous institution o GPA requirement: Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50.
- Commitment: Sign a formal Enrollment and Commitment Form, acknowledging their dedication to participate actively in at least seven (7) tutoring and mentoring sessions during their coursework.
- A complete application form
- Official high school and/or college transcripts
- Proof of maintaining good academic standing.
- Any supplementary documents requested by the Admission Office.
- Academic Responsibilities:
- Students must enroll in and attend tutoring and mentoring sessions as committed, utilizing the available academic support resources.
- Students are responsible for maintaining their GPA and meeting the academic requirements of their courses.
- Support and Monitoring:
- Academic advisors and faculty will consistently monitor academic progress, attendance, and engagement.
- Students will receive continuous support in line with PHSU’s core values of excellence, respect, integrity, and community service.
- Curricular Sequence & Credit Load:
- The course sequencing outlined in the curriculum will inform enrollment planning, acknowledging that students may not achieve the minimum of 12 credits in certain quarters due to sequencing requirements.
- Differentiation by Course Structure:
- Due to required prerequisites and corequisites, some transfer students may enroll in fewer than 12 credits in certain quarters.
- The SON will assess individual circumstances to balance academic rigor with student success, aiming for timely progression.
- Program Integrity:
- All enrollments will ensure that students meet the required academic standards to uphold programmatic accreditation and maintain the quality of our nursing program.
- Transfer students must adhere to the same academic progression, clinical compliance, and conduct policies as all other enrolled students.
- Transfer credit decisions are final and non-appealable once validated and confirmed in writing by the Registrar.
- This policy applies to transfer requests at both the undergraduate and graduate levels of nursing, subject to curriculum-specific requirements.
- Compliance monitoring To monitor compliance:
- Admissions and registrar: validate transfer students’ GPA through review of official transcript
- The Office of Regulatory Compliance will conduct a sample test to monitor compliance with this policy.
PHSU SON reserves the right to review this policy annually to ensure continued compliance with accreditation standards and institutional goals.
