NUR 3122 - Nursing Informatics and Globalization

(3 Credits)

This course is intended to introduce students to informatics and global health systems with their models and their influence on health disparities and the delivery of health services. The focus of this course is for students to think critically and discuss health and healthcare within a global environment and how the use of computing may or may not influence access to health services. Students will demonstrate an advanced understanding of the theoretical constructs of human behavior, leadership, organizational dynamics, and informatics used to support various population databases. All this is with the support and use of computing, where we will include definitions, theories, technologies, workflows, and expectations in computing. These are essential tools to prepare the nursing student to use the latest health technologies to improve their understanding of electronic databases, computerized medical records, and medical decision support systems. Students will be exposed to applications of technological systems in the monitoring and treating of chronic and emerging diseases in community populations and acute care settings for disease management and palliative care. Topics include preventable and emerging new infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, chronic diseases in minority populations, and selected orphan diseases. Forty-five (45) lecture hours.
