ENG 1020 - Basic Principles of Reading and Writing


(3 Credits)

This foundational course is designed to enhance students’ academic literacy by developing their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and academic writing skills. Emphasis is placed on analyzing texts across genres, constructing well-organized essays, and applying proper grammar, punctuation, and style. Students will learn strategies for reading critically, summarizing, paraphrasing, synthesizing information, and developing coherent arguments supported by evidence. The course prepares students to engage in scholarly inquiry, utilize appropriate citation styles (APA/MLA), and communicate ideas clearly and effectively in academic settings. These skills provide a critical foundation for success in professional and clinical communication in health sciences and nursing contexts. Forty-five lecture hours.
